BEU Action Plan  2007-2008

1. Negotiations and Grievances

A. Negotiate New Policy on Evaluations and Supervision:

B. Settle issues that result from new contract language around elementary start times

C. Form committee to negotiate duties agreement at BHS

D.  Work with Human Resources on Licensure Issues    

E.  Develop a schedule to visit all schools so members can talk with union leaders and share their concerns.

F.  Begin to collect issues that will be relevant to our next overall contract discussions;  focus on improvement in Paraprofessional contract

2. Provide information and education to our members and the community on relevant topics

A.  Member presents workshop on investment in 403b and 403b7:  what’s right for educators.  One session for members who have not yet chosen an investment plan and one for those who have.

B. Members organize forum/discussion on the need for national health care reform.

C.  Continue to publish regular newsletters and publish a calendar with relevant school/union dates.  Develop and publish an updated Discount Directory.  Plan and sponsor a Welcome Party.  Update the BEU website.

3. Community Relations and Educational Policy

A.  Work with community on issues related to education:  Educator for a day, reading initiatives, plans for extended school day if needed

B. Work to bring diversity to staff and BEU leadership

C. Advocate for more and better training for Paras

D. Help shape policy on: tracking, assessments, standards

E.  Reestablish monthly column in the Brookline TAB

 4. Membership, Organizing and Benefits

 A. Continue organizing membership, focus on reaching out to Paras

 B. Recruit more BEU activists and leaders
