Last night the BEU Negotiation Team (our core speaking representatives and silent representatives) continued Para negotiations with the BSC for the 3rd time. Almost all of the BEU Para proposals were rejected.
The good news is that one proposal was accepted – 7 a. Credit 10-month paraprofessionals with 12 days sick leave per year; and twelve-month paraprofessionals, 14. (Section 4.1.A) (That is an increase of two days for each.)
The BSC is interested in “tweaking” the BEU’s Para PD proposal. The BSC wants to limit the number of paras and have only two PD council meetings per academic year.
Section 5 Professional Development: Add the following new Section 7.2.C to provide better PD for
Paraprofessionals.
5. Professional Development: Add the following new Section 7.2.C to provide better PD for Paraprofessionals:
In addition, the parties will establish a Paraprofessional PD Council for the purpose of addressing the professional development needs of all bargaining unit members and making recommendations to the Superintendent. The Council will consist of 5 members appointed by the Superintendent or his/her designee and 5 members appointed by the BEU President. This Council shall meet at least four times per year and shall attempt to meet during early release days. If the Council meets after the normal workday, those hours shall be considered and compensated as work time.
Our next scheduled Para negotiation meeting is March 12 at 6:00 pm
