The Brookline Educators Union is a democratic organization of close to 1200 members that promotes and defends quality public education for all. We do this by uniting members, which increases their power, individually and collectively. Those represented by the BEU play a decisive role in improving public education thanks to their legally protected right to act together as part of their union. Solidarity ensures that members of our collective bargaining units will be treated fairly and be protected against any retaliation should they raise concerns. Collective bargaining frees educators to do their finest work because it gives educators the power to negotiate fair compensation, fair treatment, and reasonable working conditions in our schools and home visits.
The contracts between the BEU and the School Committee protect against any use of inequitable, arbitrary, and capricious power, which can only hurt morale and undermine the most basic sense of justice. Your union membership protects you legally, strengthens your voice, and enables us all to exercise “mutual aid or protection.” As we draw on all of our experience, we as the union “connect the dots” and present the “big picture,” instead of our insights as individuals alone that we might share with our colleagues and supervisors. That combined professional knowledge of our school system and its larger contexts gives the union an indispensable understanding of what our students need, and what will enable educators to play a vital role in seeing that those needs are met.
